Dedicated Containers

Larger shipments will generally be sent by dedicated (or “Full Container Load” – FCL for short). A shipping container will be hauled directly from the docks to your address for loading. When complete, the doors are closed and a tamper-proof customs seal placed over the handles. The container is hauled directly back to the UK port for loading to a vessel. At destination the container is unloaded from the vessel and hauled directly to your delivery point where the customs seal is checked and broken before the goods are unloaded. In some countries local laws require that the container is unloaded at a customs approved warehouse and the goods transferred to a delivery van for the final step of the journey. Our office will provide full information should this be the case.

Part Containers

Smaller shipments can be sent by part container (or “Less than Container Load” – LCL for short). The goods are returned to our warehouse where they are strapped onto pallets or loaded into wooden cases. These are then “consolidated” with other shipments for the same destination which are all loaded together in a dedicated container. At destination the container is removed from the vessel and a specialist “deconsolidator” removes the pallets and cases from the container. These can then be delivered “as-is” or further broken down into their component items for loose delivery. This method of shipment offers the same short transit time as a dedicated container, with the advantage of only paying for the part of the container that is used.

Shared (groupage) containers

For small personal shipments only we also offer the option of a shared (or “groupage”) container to selected destinations. Your goods are returned to our warehouse where they are loaded “loose” into a dedicated container together with other consignments for the same destination. At destination our local partner will unload the entire container at their depot and deliver the individual packages to you. This method of shipment offers a longer transit time than a dedicated or part container (typically 2 – 4 weeks longer) but is extremely cost effective for smaller shipments.
